Seriously, that's sad both about how they conducted themselves towards your brother and also that they're now deceased. Life's too damn short...we all get to choose how we live it.

TH, please don't attack CG. She's one of the nicest and most intelligent people you'll ever meet- despite her straight-talk stance on the board she's kind and adorable. It's ok to disagree with eachother but that shouldn't turn into poking and jabbing. Some people have a very difficult time with this process and some of us carry scars for a long time, possibly forever. I'm glad you've found your place of peace and moving on, that's excellent, but we all heal and cope at our own pace. So while we can encourage eachother to not be consumed by this let's be thoughtful of everyone's feelings by giving them compassion and support and allowing them the time they need to move on.

My brother got full custody of his son at about 15 when the mother had confrontations with and hit the boy. It was a cut and dry court date. She was full of much anger and a substance abuser. She stole about $2000 from her employer and tried to take refuge into Canada, but was deined at the border. It is believed that she committed suicide at a motel on the border that night.

I don't understand how people stand for these unfair laws any more where one spouse (usually the W these days) walks out on the M or has an A and files a D and there are little one's and the other spouse (invariably the H these days) gets involuntarily financially shafted and that's in addition to the emotional pain. And all this is "in the best interest of the kids" and of society? Wouldn't they make more sensible choices and go to counseling and work on their M or whatever problems they have if they are not given any of this windfall of $$$ for doing wrong? Isn't this encouraging selfish or foolish or mentally unstable people to do this destructive act? Take KerryK - his W went clubbing, contracted VD and got in bed with a very rich old sugar daddy and then still gets 50% custody of the kids and he still had to pay her alimony and child support! In Arab countries they stone people (just women unfortunately) for infidelity but in the Western world they are rewarded by getting half of all the property, no questions asked! Many people don't even see how messed up this is. I mean isn't it time for marching in the streets or getting the supreme court involved to straighten out this sort of gross injustice that is destroying lives and society daily?

I agree 1000000 % with this view.
Our laws are based in 1950's mentality.

I was once given a "lecture" by my xMIL about how D is such a good and beneficial "godsend" (her words), because in the "bad ole' days" husbands could cheat all they wanted and women could do nothing but be treated like "property". And she said that if a wife cheated she could be "killed" and no one would do anything about it. So now it was all "fair" because women could file for D and take the H to the cleaners if he didn't make her happy. (She asserts that it is the job of a H to make sure his W is always happy and taken care of. No reciprocation necessary on her part should be necessary. Otherwise, if she is not "happy" then the W should definitely end the M.)

She was referring to the 1950's and earlier.

Yes, she is insanely self-serving and demented. And yes, I now cannot fathom how on earth I could have ever been M'ed to one of her offspring.

As crazy as people like her are, I sense by our legal system that there are far too many people out there of a similar bent.
