found it! For those interested in the book Gardener mentioned, not the Zappa book, you can find it at Selfleadership.org

But I liked the Zappa book. It's full of useful stuff like "Coffee is a food group", and "Why pop music is doomed to ever decreasing intervals of nostalgia, and why some day we won't be able to take a step forward without being nostalgic over the step we just took".

Oh... and Frank's favorite high school memory of the one and only pep rally he attended. The cheerleaders came on stage and said, "Everybody stand up, and this includes you, Frank Zappa!" smile

Thanks, wii,
Amazon lists it as currently not available.
I got it at Borders.

Journaling,

StepS, 32 never "unfriended" me on my IRL facebook page (or on his, I should say). I always took that as a possibly hopeful sign. So, he's been following along on my posts/life and I on his.

Three or four times in the last seven months I summoned up the courage to "like" something he posted; once, I even wrote a short comment. No replies. Fine. Wasn't expecting any. I was just glad that my few forays into his page didn't cause him to "unfriend" me.

Last night, I read that my favorite film (and his), 2001: A Space Odyssey was playing a midnight showing in a theatre in lower Manhattan. I hadn't seen it on the big screen in years. I fb'd it was playing and I that I was off to see it. At 3:30 am I got home and fb'd that it was great seeing it in a theatre again.

This morning I fb'd a YouTube clip of our favorite scene from it.

I just saw that an hour ago he "liked" it.

I'll take that. First baby step, first contact of any kind in seven months. For such a little thing it felt very, very good.

My next step? Nothing. Or nothing for a while.
Stepson whisperer.

When I got home last night/this morning, the stove exhaust fan was on. X had been in the house with a new potential realtor last night. This morning she emailed that she left it on because she smelled gas. She has a great sense of smell; I do not.

I pulled out the stove and did a soapy-water spray test on the hose and all connections. Nothing. As I pushed the stove back, the hose re-coiled/bent and I not only suddenly smelled it, I heard it! A hiss. Not good. Bad leak.
Shut off the main, called the gas company and called X and sincerely thanked her.

I've been off the boards for a few days. Will catch up with you all soon.
You are always in my thoughts and prayers.

Peace,

Gardener

Wow! Grace comes in many different forms.

Rule #1 in taming someone/something: no sudden moves. (I think I read that in The Little Prince or something....

I'm glad the gas leak ended well, that was too close for comfort!

And a wonderful first baby step from StepS! And you already know how to respond- like you said: "StepS Whisperer". I'm hoping for more of those baby steps for you, at a gentle pace everyone can handle.

Best wishes for a nice holiday, Gardener!

Hugs, Bunny

Mrs. A., hm, Bunny.
Thanks. On both counts.
No expectations with StepS, just hope. Prayers.
We were so very close.
I try not to make assumptions any more. Got that from The Four Agreements and realized that 99% of all my sitch and non-sitch assumptions turn out wrong.
But my assumption on this is:
He's in pain.
Confused.
Conflicted.
Misses me.

I know him. He's a homebody, a strongly family-oriented man and has a heart of gold.
I gladly and lovingly give him all the time and space he needs to sort it all through and process it.

(Of course, I did that for his mother, too...) crazy whistle laugh

but, see, his mother has that common but unnamed mental illness common to walkaways. stepson has been exposed to it, but it's not really contagious in that way. two different dynamics operating here. don't assume that your relationship with him will turn out like the one with his mother...since we're talking about assumptions here.
