I read something interesting that you might try (and I will try not to muck up the experiment too much, but I am working from memory):

1.List three negative things that have happened to you in the past.

2. List things you learned from each of these negative experiences.

3. List things for each of these experiences that have had a positive impact on your life.

4-17. For the next 2 weeks make a list of 10 things you are grateful for.

19. Repeat the 2-17 sequence a few times, each time comparing the lists in 2-3.
