Well I got something from the hardware store to cover the hole on the side of the door but think I am going to still need some wood at least to put in where the lock "box" was. Also bought the bit for my drill to cut the whole larger. Feeling a bit better thinking I might be able to make this work after all. Not going to attempt it until this weekend though.

Did I ever mention, I love hardware stores? (Office supply stores too!) They fill me with such hope that I can tackle the next issue! lol
