Part of the door was chiseled out to put the lock in. It is probably a box area of 6" x 4" and not quite the width of the door. So when you take off the handles, take off the part that turns the deadbolt, you can see the tumblers etc through the hole in the door where your key would go.
You can't just put a new lock through that. So you look at the edge of the door and you can see where the lock comes out and realize that there is a faint outline of this "box" section. Pry that out and the whole thing comes out. Fairly easy to take apart, not so easy fitting it all back together just so. I want to really know what I am doing before I attempt this again.
