Quick thoughts - sounds like your H is a man floundering. He doesn't know what to do, he doesn't communicate well, he latches onto things at random looking for the silver bullet that will fix everything.
So, he's in a store, sees these toys, remembers you saying something once upon a time, and buys them. But he's scared you won't like them, or that you'll take it wrong, so he doesn't bring them up. Instead, he lets you discover them to see your reaction.
Translation: maybe he's trying, but not in the way you want. Remember, many men are clueless when it comes to relationships, and your H seems to fit in that category. Heck, that was me four years ago.
