You could get a young pure bred dog on petfinders.com It wouldn't be as much work as a puppy. I rescued my lab on petfinders she was a year old when I got her. She is always by my side and follows me everywhere. She is a great companion and gives unconditional love. I would love to get a yellow lab too, but I already have 2 dogs the lab and a greyhound.
Pluses: they potty train themselves and are fiercly loyal. Intelligent.
Minuses: drool and food particles on you walls (etc), strong willed, dominate breed (can turn to aggressive under wrong conditions or with wrong owner), snoring, eye problems (my oder dog has had to have an eyelid lift to keep his lashes from ulcerating his cornea), possible skin conditions, possible shar pei fever.

I didn't know they had those health issues. They are very cute though. What color are they? Do you bring them to the dog park? That's a nice way to meet people that you have something in common with. I take my dogs sometimes.

All dogs have potential health issues. Different issues for different breeds.
Duncan is Chocolate, and Sassy is Lilac (common color is Fawn).
Duncan has this dominance thing where we provokes other dogs by staring at them, but he doesn't get viscous until being bitten pretty badly a few times. Sassy is food/toy possesive, but she is otherwise friendly unless she is sleeping (she wakes up nasty grumpy these days--growling and sounding viscous--smile).
I worry that they will provoke other dogs (Duncan) and then it will get really nasty (Sassy don't take kindly to any aggression).
They're a handfull. I need Ceasar Milan (Dog Whisperer guy), I think.
Most of the time, they're not a problem, but they have got into a few bloody fights this year. Once over a Porterhouse steak, one over who was going to sleep on which bed in the Hotel the weekend before last, and much earlier they got into a fight over who was going to sleep where on the couch.
Once they work these things out, they are fine, but... let's just say I am getting much better at intervention and anticipating triggers.
Stangely, they only do this when I am around.

Are they good travel companions? That is what I would like. I can't travel with my lab because she is very nervous. I got her from a shelter and the previous owner must have abused her. She is terrified of loud noises like fire works. I got her from Queens, NY so anything could have happened to her. I would love to have a dog that I could travel with. Thats why i was considering getting a yellow lab too.
Not to go off puppy-topic but I found this and thought it insightful to what most of us are dealing with trying to understand:
"An affair, whether online or off, quite often has less to do with a pure attraction between the people involved, and more to do with the holes in their lives that need filling."
This might explain why the OP isn't necessarily better looking then the LBS...and obviously some of the MLC'ers have more "holes in their lives that need filling" then others have.
