In Braveheart "Daddy Long Shanks" was Mel Gibsons character. A proud and loving husband whose holding his ground as a man on the kings land. Of course the kings decided to re-instate a long standing tradition of "First Night" with the brides. "First night" was where the virginity was broken by the king and his men.
So in the context I know "Daddy Long Shanks" was a good guy.
