Not necessarily. Depends on the jurisdiction, and the circumstances. In my state and situation, it made absolutely no legal difference whatsoever. I just did it because I felt like I had to finally draw a hard line -- THE HARDEST line one can draw -- for the sanctity of the marriage, and for my own emotional health. But it gave me no legal advantage.
