Newmama, it is not dumb at all of you to not know that! When people ask what I do for a living they never expect to hear "violinmaker"! There are violins made by machines but it is still impossible for a violin to be made completely by a machine. The sound that is produced by a handmade violin is light years ahead of anything a machine could produce.

Seeing Red, I got involved in violinmaking by accident mostly. I started playing classical guitar when I was 16 because all my friends played electric guitar. I could not get the hang of using a pick so I used my fingers instead. That combined with my natural inclination towards classical music set me on that path. I got better and better on the guitar and when I was in my first year of art school I obsessed about making my own guitar. The guitars that I could afford to buy sucked! For 3 years I wanted to make a guitar and finally when I was at my 3rd art school at IU I discovered the violinmaking program there.
After one semester in the program I fell in love with it and dropped art school. Turns out that I was pretty much cut out for it. I don't think I even touched a violin before I made my first one. My first violin sold for $5,000. to a very nice retired school teacher. Way more than I had ever sold a piece of art for.

Just got an email from my lawyer. I guess the court wants to know why we are not paying child support to each other before they will approve it. Here comes more fun!

"Starving artist becomes the next Antonio Stradivari" (or a Midwest facsimile there of).
RED I KNEWWWW you had to be a writer! I love the way you put words together and tell stories! Yes, what type of stuff do you write? (sorry for the hijack, Violin!)
Umm...this is confusing- why are you NOT paying child support before they approve it? Meaning are you supposed to pay based on what you feel like and that is good enough for now? ????

The child support issue is that she makes 4x what I make. She has the house, most of the furniture, and more of the custody. She also pays for everything relating to the kids(when they are with her). We agreed to not take child support from each other. I beleive that it is healthy for us to do it that way. I would be bankrupt if I had to pay her $130 a week, which is what the state calculator showed for my tiny income.
