Geronimo, I'm a lurker at heart but had to tell you how helpful your burning house/swimming pool analogy is to me, it describes my WH's mindset perfectly even though he's an excellent swimmer too! I haven't read enough of your sitch to know if there's an OP, but I think if there is that person keeps them stuck in that pool and somewhat afloat but they sure aren't learning how to swim like that.
