Well, tonight I decided to make myself some satayed oysters for dinner, served with fried rice and garlic stems. My kids aren't with me and they hate oysters so tonight is the night! It occurred to me while I was shopping at the Chinese grocery store that not only did I lose a marriage I also lost a culture. For 17 years I was surrounded by Chinese culture, I cooked Chinese food, shopped at Chinese stores, many of our friends were Chinese and now it's all different. My kids don't like Chinese food and I'm used to making it for a family so I don't make it often when I'm by myself. At work, for laughs, I still throw out some Chinese words and phrases to make my Chinese clients giggle but I've lost some of my understanding and ability to speak (very poorly) the language. I can't remember phrases. One of my Dbing moves was to learn to cook Chinese and, although I thought it would be really hard, I learned to cook over fifty Chinese dishes. My wife worked later than I did so I usually did the cooking during the week. Now, I throw on a burger and top it with cooked spinach, that's a gourmet meal! Anyway, off to the kitchen to do the Oysters.
