It's okay. I totally appreciate the input. I think I will talk more about choices, mine specifically to limit his defensiveness, and I love your point that they also choose to maintain a R with me.

About the last bit, it is definitely a bit of telling him what to do. But frankly, since I don't care to maintain a R with him, I don't care if he doesn't like it. They won't call him on it, and if my saying something that gets him pissed off and thinking actually pushes him to develop a better relationship with his family then that would be a great side effect.
