Yes - car shopping stinks. I usually take the following approach...Mr. Salesman - here is what I am willing to pay for X car. Please let me know if this price is acceptable. Please do not go back and forth with the manager. A simple yes will suffice. If you need to go back to the manager I will leave.
Quite often it has worked for me.
