Okay, let me throw out a positive "spin". If H hadn't been home and ready to stay, he wouldn't have made such a suggestion at all. Sometimes, it just being insenstive and not thinking, not any great strategy. I don't think he meant to hurt you, he just didn't think, and then he's put off by the thought that he needs to be "on his toes", minding his manners all the time. I know that upsets my H. It's a positive sign that he's able to talk to you without thinking it through first.
