I think the principle here that worked is that his wife lacked EMPATHY. So he would have to call her out when she went too far, and said something that was just plain hurtful or rude or disrespectful, while at the same time continuing his Job-like patience at DBing and piecing.
His wife, as I recall, responded very well to this. In almost every instance, she would immediately "make nice" to him after he called her on her b.s.
