This sounds great! You are slowly climbing up the rungs of the ladder again. I think he understands. He just doesn't seem to want or be able to use words to express or communicate with you about the grief over this past year. Not sure about how that is for you when you like words.
I'm very excited he went to find a walking group near where you live. This is good for a thousand reasons.
