Your W owes your son an apology. Good for you for trying to buffer the situation for him. Maybe your son needs to learn how to stand up to his mother and tell her he doesn't deserve to be yelled at. I feel badly for him feeling so powerless and belittled by her. He can't make her stop, but he can learn to let someone know he doesn't like being mistreated (mother's included).
