It's a vicious cycle. It's his pride and guilt that keep him from admitting the truth to you. Doesn't make it easier to deal with, obviously doesn't excuse his lies and evasions, just saying.

Don't let it get to you. It's got nothing to do with you other than how it impacts your budget. It's not personal. He's probably not trying to get any reaction out of you. It just is.
