They aren't like a chest freezer. There is a top rack that slides in and out on top of the bin. So there are two layers. It's a pretty neat design. And they are supposedly the most energy efficient (guess that makes sense since cold air goes down right?)
My other choice would have been a side by side. But I hate how narrow the freezers are. It's hard to fit larger items in there, and they fill up so fast.
I am just happy to be getting away from a top freezer. I hate having to bend over all the time to look for milk, eggs, butter, lettuce, etc etc etc. Like everything for every meal. The only time I need the freezer is to pull something out to defrost or for ice.

Yeah, I have a side by side and I love having the ice and water through the door but the freezer is a real pain for me. Thankfully I don't get many large things I have to freeze so it's all good.

See that was the other thing. It is just about impossible to find a side by side that doesn't have ice and water in the door. My fridge area doesn't have water hook ups. So why would I want to lose all that space in the freezer to a water and ice thing that I can't even use?

That is why I got a bottom freezer. I really wanted the 2 door with ice and water in the door, I actually drink more water when I have a fridge like that. We had one but it is too wide for my current house...
The bottom freezer works better for me for holding frozen pizza and similar things my kids like to eat. The side by side freezers were way too tiny!
I wanted the ice and water for the same reason BBJ. I drink more water when I have that. Practically every time I walk by I fill my glass. Of course if you don't have the water line there is absolutely no reason to take up that room. You could make the argument that the bags of ice or ice cube trays take up just as much room though.

I'm not big on ice. I'll keep a couple trays in there, that'll be fine. For water, I already have a Brita pitcher. I keep that filled and that works great for me.
I bought a Maytag french door bottom freezer sans water last year. I love having the freezer on the bottom and the fridge on top. The only negative is that my kids can't reach a lot of food in the fridge so I have to get it for them. I didn't want to pay the extra for the water since I can open the fridge and use a Brita just as easily. It cut the cost down significantly since I really wanted the french door feature.

I like the bottom freezer... I wasn't sure I would. But I like not having to bend down to go through the fridge, which I am in a lot more than the freezer. I do wish I had water, but I have a Brita pitcher in the fridge, and a sink I can fill it from without taking a step. I haven't lived through a summer with it yet, though! We had a Brita filtered water cooler that you filled at the sink, but XW got that, and I don't think they make it anymore. Having the kids over there more than at my place, it makes sense, anything that makes it easier for them to get water is a good thing. If the water is cold, I don't use a lot of ice, though I did add a filter to the icemaker last fall for when I do.
Of course if you don't have the water line there is absolutely no reason to take up that room. You could make the argument that the bags of ice or ice cube trays take up just as much room though.
