This is an excellent idea; I've done that when applying for tech support jobs and customer service jobs.

And yes, the absolute last thing you need to do is stay at home. If you must, spend time on Monster or some other job search sites. Don't miss the opportunity to walk resumés out by hand as well.

Your wife should be the last thing on your mind right now. You need to take care of YOU, YOU, YOU. (Your kids come a close second.)
