also something else that seems so important is he seems to try his damnedest to correct our children not to make the same mistakes he did...homework...behavior.respect. obsessively

Yes it is something that happened in his childhood, maybe teens or preteens that he has an issue with his parents. His father having a heart attack could trigger that he will never be able to resolve these issues. Understand you have become the role of the parent and he doesn't like his parents, so he takes out his anger on YOU (the surrogate parent)
