From experience I learned there is never a perfect time for kids. Everything just seems to work out if two people want to be parents.
As for the doing things alone, yes, that will definitely change, but as long as you to keep "dating" each other and keep that end alive, the kids don't get in the way. In fact, it makes things a bit more exciting if you have to "slip in a quickie" while the kids are safely distracted elsewhere.
