18 months ago, H missed the final deadline I had set in my head. I went away, 3 days, on a rocky beach outside Athens, stayed at a friends' place. It was end of June 2008. I could hear the waves all night, sleeping in a "strange bed", forcing myself to take the next step to cut my losses. I believe I was in a similar state of mind you are. I wanted to say my goodbyes. Many things happened that weekend. I now think, it was an end, and the beginning of what happened next, too complicated to explain.
Kettricken is right. You can prepare all you can, you will still feel the punches in your stomach down the road.
