Oh, and next time she tries the pity-party thing, just say "I know -- this is very hard on ALL of us."
Be a good listener when you're with her (or on the phone), and DO validate. But then get-in/get-out quickly; don't hang around long enough for her to treat you like her confidante gay boyfriend. (Not that there's anything WRONG with that )
