My W sent me a text to tell me she moved out. (Nice huh?) I think her conscience was weighing on her and it helped her feel better about herself to try to cushion the blow for me. (F-ing thanks!) Maybe that's what your H was doing. He may be trying deep down to reach for some way to tell himself that he is doing something right. Trying to convince himself that he's looking out for his kids. (Obviously he's not doing what's best for them so he's reaching for anything)
Maybe I'm reaching, but it makes sense that they try to do someing like that (give the warning) to feel better about themselves.
