I know that if a engagement is broken off, that the woman should give the ring back. What is the common thing to do for a divorce? I see the ring as a symbol of the marriage, commitment, etc. If the man ends the marriage, I can see the woman keeping the ring. What if the woman ends the marriage?

brkn....

Stop it! The rings are symbols, but they seem to be the main thing you've been worried about since you've been here!

I am at the point where I am packing my things, separating property, etc. The rings are a high dollar value, whats wrong with asking this question? Im not sure what you mean by "seem to be the main thing you've been worried about since you've been here!"...

Ooops! I got crossed up.... you posted on the ring thread, but it wasn't you! Sorry....

So, anyway, to you, she is choosing to end the marriage. I'm sure she would have a different opinion. Nonetheless, after 11 years, I don't see how she doesn't keep the rings. Unless she throws them at you, in which case if you catch them, you keep them! wink

Yes, they are her's ... you gave them as a gift in the eyes of the law...

My W kept all her jewelry I gave her. They were a gift. I suppose I could have included their value in the division of asset calculation, but I did not. There were certain things we agreed upon to split before that. You have to pick your fights carefully. I say let her keep the rings.

The weird thing is that my W (and her mother) wanted a Buddha necklace (with considerable amount of gold) back that her mother had given me early on in our marriage. I stood my ground and said no as it is a sentimental gift to me even though I am not a Buddhist.

I guess the gift thing makes sense. I may melt my ring down and get it molded into a broken heart. Then give it to her when we sign the D papers. hehe...
