I vote live separated and date. If I ever get to that crossroads again where reconciliation presents itself, that is the route I intend to take. Dating without living together (I hope) allows for some of that romance/flirting stuff, a build-up. I know in my sitch going straight to living together would mean back to status quo, which is unacceptable.
I wonder if the piece you are missing is desire/romance/flirtation? Oh, wait, that's me...
