Doing good today.

Some changes:

Became more committed to the Eightfold path (right speech, right action...). This is about a spiritual as it gets for me. It's helped me let go of little things, become more confident in my actions. I still have a long way to go. I could go on but I don't have time this morning.

Became more detached. It just feels better when I don't go there.

Became calmer.

I feel like I am doing things because I want to. Not to impress others or win their approval. (Notably the She).

Will discuss more later.

Rode on my bike trainer for first time since surgery. Clipped left foot in. Let right foot coast with little pressure. 40min and all is well.

I dusted off my bowflex treadclimber today. Three miles on that thing isnt nearly as gratifying as three miles on the beach! But I certainly sweat more! Its sort of sad to come back inside for winter. I need to learn to ski!

It sounds like you have made some good choices for yourself. Im glad to hear it. You deserve to feel better.

Dont go messin' up that bionic foot now!

Downhill or XC? Classic or Skate?

Downhill and Snowboarding require time, lessons, and money to learn. Start out at small ski area that's cheap. (O'Dog grew up as a ski school kid in SEA. Now years later loves to hammer moguls.)

Telemark - Haven't tried it although my friends with really stiffer boots and bindings seem to have an easier time with it.

Classic/backcountry xc - Don't worry about it. Just put em on a go. Even little kids can go places just by shuffling feet. Technique will follow. Equipment isn't as important.

Skate - Fast on hard packed stuff but harder to learn. Take a lesson, watch a video or learn from a friend your first time out. The long poles and sideways motion of the skis make things clumsy at first (think of a drunk giraffe). Equipment is a more important.

Hmmm...This all sounds like a good excuse to visit A. Hit the big box stores, specialty stores, and resell stores.

The indoor stuff is intense but boring if not done properly. Here are a few things done here among the Tri people to help adapt to the great indoors.

1. Customize your workout area so it's a fun place to be. Add TV's, music, food, exercise mats, reading stands, whatever. I've seen some pretty custom setups.

2. The more the merrier. Meet up with friends for training events. One of the local bike stores has indoor group rides every Saturday morning during the winter. Show up with your bike and trainer and ride along. You never get left behind. The Tri club also holds regular swims, runs at the indoor track, and group rides. Our largest group rides on New Years day bring in over 150 people. We have food, coaches, and a live DJ. Cool huh?

I have been snowboarding a few times, had a blast. I think that most people down here cross country ski, I have some friends who are fanatic about it, so Ill bet that I wouldnt have trouble getting started at all! I just wish that it wasnt so equipment intensive. The bowflex has a read out screen that I can put a book on, I usually study while Im on it. I should start swimming again, the pool here started a masters swim club. I was a lifeguard forever and swam competitively in high school. But you have to pay for that too! The club here has huge fees.

Sounds like yours is fun though! Hey, do you get studs for your bike tires?

I've tried snowboarding too and liked it. It took me a long time before I was willing to try because I was too afraid of spending the day rolling around in the snow on the bunny hill.

Find out where people are skiing and what kind of conditions they most often encounter. Buy the gear that best works for the terrain and the type of skiing you will be doing.

I don't have studs for my bike...yet. Knobbys work fine on packed and shallow loose and feel just the same as riding on dirt. I plan to studs this season so I can expand my riding to more conditions.

People who are really into winter riding say the super-fat-tire bikes like the Surly Pugsley, Fatback, and 9:ZERO:7 are without comparison. (I've got too many two-wheelers already).

Even though I try my hardest to play outside during the winter and I've got a garage full of toys to do it, I'd rather be discussing reef shoes, rash guards, and regulators.

This is very hard to explain so you may have to work at it a bit to understand. I feel like when I look back from the time of the bomb (mid Feb) to about a month after move-out (mid July), as if I am looking back on a different person at times. Like I wasn't quite there but was more intense than usual?

Anyone else ever have similar experiences?
