Well, kinda. They can't fire you for a medical reason though...that's discriminatory. But you're right that most states are "at will" employment. Which means either employer or employee can terminate employment at will.

There are some limitations though.

They could fire you if you were calling in sick all the time when you weren't sick. But firing you for excessive absence when you are really sick puts them at risk of a lawsuit and doesn't look good for the company.
