I understand your concerns, but it sure sounds to me that you are feeling the same things any of us would, in your situation. I think the fact that you were wanting to "try" says something, too. Not long ago, I don't think you would have even considered that an option.
It seems to me that he is starting to make an effort, though he really doesn't know how. Hopefully he can learn. Time will tell.
