Thats's funny. I was looking at tents last night online, and I will probably pick one up today.

This is not something we ever did as a family. I will probably set up the tent in our back yard for S and I to try out at some point this weekend. Don't know if W will be interested or not - and I don't care.

I plan on having the boys and I sleep in the tent in the backyard next week since we couldn't go camping. They love camping, so I thought it would be fun. Like you said, will W be interested in joining us? Who knows and who cares. As long as the boys are having fun. (And me too!)

If you buy a tent, spend the extra $ to get a good one with a solid rainfly that goes all the way to the ground, taped seams, a waterproof floor, etc. It really makes an difference if when the weather goes bad.

There are a lot of cheaper tents out there, but they are really only good when you don't really need a tent anyway.

Good point. Our first tent was leaky, and after an unexpected rain one night, we learned how important that is. Although, once the rain started coming in, we just jumped into the same sleeping bag which was waterproof and zipped it all the way up over our heads and made the best of a bad situation wink

Thanks Thinker. I was looking at campmor.com last night. Can't decide if I should go with a 4 person tent initially and then get a 6 person if we stay interested in it or just get the 6 person. I read some stuff last night that said you should buy a tent that is 2 persons larger than the # of people who will typically be sleeping in it. That way, you have room for your gear.

Depending on the cost, I would go with the 6 man. There are 4 of us, and we have a 6 man tent. It's nice to have the room, especially for the kids. They can move around better in it, and just like you said, you can keep more stuff in it. The one I have has an extra large window on both sides. Think about that, too. It is nice to have as much air flowing through the tent as possible.

2 people can't fit in most sleeping bags.

A short aside about how I know this...

Years ago while camping in the snow with temperatures well below freezing, a woman that was on the trip (part of a group of friends) accidentally opened a water bottle in her sleeping bag. She had it there to keep it from freezing over night. It got her bag wet, which then started freezing around her. She went into hypothermic shock, became incoherent, etc. - really pretty scary.

I tried the standard survival advice which say's to put her in my own sleeping bag with me, and found that, even though she was small, the two of us just would not fit. Luckily there were more than just two of us on the trip, and we ended up surviving the night and saving her by using 2 sleeping bags for 3 people. A second woman who was on the trip and I zipped our sleeping bags together, and put the hypothermic girl in the middle between us. She came around, we counted the hours until the sun came up, and we were able to hike her out the next day.

Wow, that's a scary story. Thankfully it turned out ok.
We had a larger than normal bag, so we fit. We were very close together, but as I said, we made the best of it.

Depends on what you are going to do with it.

If you are backpacking, go with the lightest one.

If you are family car camping, go with the bigger one. The extra room is definitely nice.

Note: if you are camping where there are bears, don't put your gear in your tent...
