Hmmm I thought all Toyotas had timing chains actually. Supposedly good for like 250k miles. Of course, your car does have some miles on it! Lol.

Same thing happened to my MIL. Her timing belt went as she was getting on the freeway. Cost about $3k to fix the engine, still cheaper than a new car though.

The Celica sounds like a fun little car. smile Bet the chicks love it. wink

Mines a '98, things may have changed a lot since then. I can't see designing something that will damage itself when a part that you know will fail breaks, but it was done that way for years.

It's only got 125k or so on it. It's a youngster.

The only problem with the Celica is climbing out of it! I seriously have to try to borrow it at appropriate times!

LMAO. My corolla is a 98 too, remember? And the Scions use timing chains as well (they're made by Toyota of course). RB has a Scion and it has a timing chain.

I think by definition, having a large belt in the engine compartment causes damage when it breaks. That's why you're supposed to change the timing belt between 75 and 100k on most cars, when it shows wear. Of course, again, on a Toyota, it's not on the scheduled maintenance til a ridiculous amount of miles.

Well, at least you know you can get another 125k out of the timing belt this time around! LOL

Jeff,

Sorry to hear about your car -- how long will the repairs take?

I was able to procure a phone for my classroom -- but had to go talk to the superintendent to get it. Sheesh!!

Still no Steve sightings.

((((Jeff))))

I don't know if he said belt or chain, but I heard belt! Doesn't matter, whatever it was broke! I was surprised. It was in an inconvenient spot, but at least it was manageable. Not on a trip in the middle of nowhere... and I driver through the middle of nowhere a lot!

Good job getting the phone. Some people just don't understand!

Steve.... I haven't read his thread... sometimes people here post a lot for a while, but don't get the advice they want, or they just get discouraged and go away for a while. But it is one reason I kind of like it when at least someone has a real-word way to contact someone... just in case.

It's going to take at least a couple days, they have to order on parts. S21 needs his car the rest of the week, so I will see if I can borrow one from his mom's parents. If not, off to the rental place I go. Yuck.

I didn't know there was anything other than a belt til I asked a mechanic about the condition of my timing belt and he said I didn't have one LOL.

Yes, good thing it was at lunch in town!

Hope you get to drive something fun for that few days!

Yesss! Get something super hot and fun -- a chick magnet car.

Unfortunately I have no advice on this, as cars are not my thing.
