I get out about once a week, but mostly out at a bar with one or more guy friends. Lots of fun, and good for me, but not really "flirt" events (see discussion above about my (hetero)sexuality... )

I have been avoiding being in a situation where I would have an opportunity to flirt because I am afraid of going too far. I wonder if I should try anyway. It would be nice to have someone interested in me again. I think it would feel good and help me gain self esteem.

Do it not for it to lead somewhere or get a woman interested in you. Do it b/c the more you become comfortable doing it the more your self esteem will grow. It's the best jolt for your confidence.
