I just don't get, one minute, reaching out to me, the next shut you down again.

It's called cycling. Any time they reach toward you, you can expect a pullback to follow. They don't usually just steadily move in your direction; it is a lot of back and forth, so you have to look at overall trends rather than individual moments or days or even weeks. Have you read "Midlife for Dummies" on the MLC forum? That explains it all so very well. In fact, I think everyone on these boards would benefit by going over to the MLC forum and reading ALL of the resources.

Do I keep on going, making sure I look good all the time, smell good, GALing and all the rest and ignore the reversal of mood.

This is your journey now, and you need to let him follow his without your interference. He will spin and spin and go all sorts of odd directions, and you just need to focus on yourself. Don't chase after him, but find your own path for your greater good. Use those lemons to make some fabulous lemonade!
