My aunt who was like a second mother to me passed away last October after a very long illness (11 years) and it was the first major tragedy to befall my family since xh walked out. It was extremely painful to not have him to just hold me when I needed it most.
I think it's the times like these that can either sink a R or give it a beacon. I'm going to pray for that beacon for you. I know you love your W even though the emotional separation is doing damage.
