Ok, I just have a minute. I would say" Thank you for taking the time to express your concern regarding my job situation. I addressed this with the kids but also told them that I was still looking and that we would be fine. Just in case you were worried about D9 not having a snack today, I have already taken care of it so don't worry. Thanks again for your concern".
I do think he is too big of an idiot to get the sarcasm, but at least you are being polite and pointing out that he forgets stuff too. Oh wait I forgot he thinks he is a God...

This is good -- strikes just the right tone, I think -- but I would add to it "I was going to tell you at the dropoff tomorrow (or whatever)." Considering the legal sitch, I don't think you want it out there that you kept something as significant as this from him, and yet told your kids (and one was upset).
To be honest, Karen, I was a little uncomfortable when I saw your original post that you weren't going to tell him. I do think he has a right to know something that potentially affects his kids. But keep it short and breezy, as Kat suggests here above.
