I'm not one to give advice, but here is one piece that comes from experience. If you can volunteer to help at your children's school, even one day a month, do it. Be involved. Be there. I never took the opportunity to do that when my son was little because I wouldn't use my vacation time to work at the school and I regret it. The more involved in their schooling you can be, the better they will learn the connection between work and volunteerism.
