Well the loss of innocence happens to everyone:

An affair.

Losing a parent.

Being sexually abused.

Having a parent who is an alcoholic.

Losing a child though illess.

Being a soldier in a brutal conflict.

Having lived as a minority in an oppressive culture.

Getting laid off, therefore being unable to support your family.

It's called living in a broken world. Things are not the way they are supposed to be.

This happens in all cultures and in all times.

Read your Bible. It's a panoply of broken, wicked people who are given second chances by a God who loves them in spite of themselves.
