What about taking him up on having them for breakfast lunch or dinner whatever works good for your work schedule.....i mean even though he complained u being into the kids too much that is your bday. But no sense in having them when you are away at work.....(at least he thought of your bday---i know my thought would go to he probably has plans...but i bet the way your h is acting he may really be thinking of you...we can alwasy hope)
