hope you don't mind a little nurse advice--several years in pediatrics. Have you heard of the BRAT diet? Bananas, rice, applesauce, toast. Yes, the apple juice is probably giving him diarrhea. Go to the brat diet, maybe some gatorade watered down a little(you can even make gatorade popsicles).
yes, there's definitely a GI virus going around. But he shouldn't be sick for a month, that's for sure. Kids do tend to get sick more at night, just because of circadian rhythms. Once he's doing okay with the brat diet, move on to noodles (chicken noodle soup is always good), chicken (not fried--boiled or roasted is good, tho, maybe one of those rotisserie chickens), potatoes if he'll eat them not fried. You might try giving him one antacid tablet before going to bed (tums, rolaids, or generic--they taste pretty good these days) and see if that helps.
Nothing more exhausting than a child vomiting in bed several nights in a row! So there's some pediatric nurse advice, along with some prayers for his recovery and your peace of mind.
HM--
I don't mind the advice at all! Thank you for reinforcing that I was doing the right things already. he is the youngest of four, so I have ran the gamut of childhood illnesses and am well familiar with the BRAT diet. I ended up having a long conversation with the pediatrician and his nurse. The conclusion we came to is that he is really not getting sick from a tummy virus, but instead it is a result of the recurrent ear infections and cold he has had most of the winter. All the mucus draining down his throat is triggering his gag reflex and that is what is causing him to throw up. We altered the position of the mattress and his pillow, and sure enough, no vomiting in two nights! He is also waking up more pleasant in the morning.
He has tolerated all of his food really well the past couple of days, but he was doing that before. I was able to cut back on the juice, which will take care of the diarrhea, too.
Thank you again for all of the advice! It helped ease my mind that I was doing the right things. the prayers were much welcomed, too.
