I think I still have "alignment" problems. My knees (plural) do not hurt as much today. Also, my lower back hurt--it also feels better today. I did some gentle stretching and very very light dance today. I think I am going to have to work harder on the physical therapy so I am balanced.

I want to push harder but I think I am going to have to be super-patient.

As far as weights, I understand what you are saying but I have to move very slowly, I am afraid. I think I'll spend some time with the light weights while I try to get the "core" muscles to where they need to be so I can do more on the exercise bike and hopefully more in other ways, too.

Breton, you might not have an ACL tear, I hope you don't! All I am saying is let a DR. check you out to make sure! An exercise bike is the lowest of impact exercises on the knee and you shouldn't be hurting! I think your knee has something other than an allignment issue going on. I understand about going slow Breton, do what you feel comfortable doing and when you feel like doing more, move up!

Glam. Yes, I am serious! 6-Packs are gained by a serious diet and cardio! I have very, very strong stomach muscles, but no 6-pack! LOL Not yet anyway! I am going to cut some fat after my contest in a couple of weeks! Anyway, Glam, I would look at my diet. What do you eat on a daily basis?

Would you explain this a little more? As a dance teacher, I'm in pretty good shape for my, uhm, age. I also walk for 40 minutes to an hour a few days a week. I'm concerned about my arms. My triceps aren't too flabby yet. I use 5lb weights. What are dips and close grip push-ups? I do 20 "girl" push ups a day and lately have added the yoga "plank", but I can barely hold it 10 counts. Should I stay the course or move up to 8lb or even 10 lb weights?

Thanks so much.

Silver Fox, you are welcome! Pretty good shape for your age huh? Let me tell you this little story before help you. I have a friend at the gym that comes in every day runs 3 miles, does 10 pull-ups, 10 dips, 10 push-ups, and 100 sit-ups. I know that doesn't sound like anything special, but this gentleman had some age on him. I asked him how he remained in such great shape and he told me that he was in the army and just kept in shape every since. I asked him when he was in the army, he replied, during the 40's, the great war!! He was 86 years old and in better shape than many in there!!! Anyway, he was in good shape for his age!!! About your arms!! Dips with a chair, take a kitchen chair and face another apart enough for you to hold yourself up with your hands on one, and put your feet on the other. At this point you should be in the air, then lower yourself down until your elbows are paralell, then push yourself up. Do this 6 sets of 6-8 reps. Close grip push-ups are a regular push-up, but with your hands in really close, you do that to concentrate on the tricep muscles. Thanks for posting, hope I helped! Any other questions, please ask!!!

BH--

The dips sound great, but I have a weakness in one wrist and it will just give out without any notice--I have dropped empty glasses because it just went numb. i injured the wrist many years ago and it is just the nature of the injury. The surgery to repair it has a horrible success rate. I just work around it instead. I did find a website with some other tricep exercises and I do have a 7 lb workout bar. I am going to do tricep presses with it, as well. I will increase my hand weights to the twos this week to see if I can build up some strength in the wrist so that I can move to the fives soon, and then the 10s. I do 3-4 sets of 15 reps of all types of arm exercises. I was doing them every day, but will start alternating them. Push ups present the same problem as the dips, but would a wall push up with close placement work, as well? I can do those and do not have to worry about falling and slamming my face into the ground like I would with a regular push up if the wrist gave out.

I do have to say that after just a couple weeks of the arm exercises, I am seeing some difference on the biceps, but there is a lot to go on the triceps. My legs are a completely different story.

I have been sick for almost two weeks and my birthday was over the weekend, so I was kind of lazy about watching what I was eating. I am getting back on track starting today.

Ouch!! That's a tough one! Not much you can do with an injured wrist, especally like that! Did you have tendon and ligament damage? Wall push-ups will help, probably not as much resistance as other exercises, but you have to do what you can. Triceps are actually easier to train than biceps, providing you are not hurt, but with that being said, there is probably more fat on everyone'e back arm since its the largest area. What's the story with your legs?

I just read your reply to my post...

I once got a bit carried away with lunges, and the next day I could barely move. I am not kidding you, I could not climb up my stairs.

And yes I learned my lesson!!

I am trying to alternate my routine so it doesn't get boring.

But I know I will be posting to you soon as I think I have reached a plateau....blech!

There can be no testimony without a test.
I am praying to go through this test and come out the other end with a new and better marriage then before.

I hyperextended my thumb in an accident and did quite a bit of ligament and tendon damage. As a result, I developed DeQuervain's Syndrome that has gotten progressively worse over the years.

As for my legs, good question. While I was pregnant with my middle daughter, I developed swelling in my lower legs and ankles. It never really subsided and got worse with each successive pregnancy. I was on lasix for all of last year with minimal success. I drink a gallon+ of water a day, so hydration is not an issue. They ran tons of tests but could not find a solution. Do not get me wrong, I am very overweight, but the swelling is excessive. I can do all leg exercises and could lay and do leg lifts for hours--they do not phase me. I played three sports in high school--soccer, softball, and basketball--but I have always struggled with me weight.

I do need to get out and walk more, but the weather and my cold have not been conducive to that. We are supposed to have a nice day tomorrow, so here's hoping!

I finally got a sitter arranged and will be joining a gym this weekend. I will only be able to go three days a week, but it is better than nothing. Hopefully, I can maybe get my mom or D17 to watch them another day or two.

So, what do you recommend for me to do at the gym? I need all over toning and weight loss.

SMW - I lost a lot of post baby weight playing tennis 3-4 days a week, following the birth of my S9... like 40 lbs. I'm fairly tall (5'7) so it was shocking to know I was still carrying around that much to loose! The bonus was my legs were toned, and BOTH arms (I hit a two handed back-hand.), HOWEVER, once I stopped doing that much cardio, I started to gain "some" back.

Just my two cents...

Back to your regularly scheduled program.

BH this would be a typical day of eating for me.

Breakfast: protein shake

snack: egg whites and raw veggies

Lunch: can of tuna, raw veggies

Snack: egg whites and raw veggies

Dinner: chicken or fish, veggies, and a salad

water for all meals and snacks.

I do snack on a few almonds and dried fruit too if I get hungry throughout the day. I am human, I have had a few choc pieces now and then, but not much for a weeks worth of eating like above.

Any suggestions?

Glam. I don't think you are consuming ENOUGH calories. I know you may think I am crazy, but I think with you diet that your body is holding on to its fat out of instinct. I would up my caloric intake a bit and see what happens. You are aren't eating 1200 calories a day and as active as you are, its not enough.
