BH what do you suggest for abs? I have had 3 children and can't seem to tone that area. What is the secret there? My diet is pretty good. I am doing crunches. Abs look better, but not what I want them to look like.

Any advice?

Very light--I'm not sure but I think maybe 5 pounds.

I'm down--this is the third time I've happily begun an exercise program, only to run into some problem. The "alignment" problem seems to continue to cause problems. I've been to the doctor and I have some physical therapy exercises that I'm going to start up with again.

I think that this time, I'm going to pause and breath, do the PT exercises and try to get back to the bike rather than stop altogether. I was enjoying it and I felt good. I'll see how I am doing in a week or less.

I am honestly surprised that the knees hurt this much. This just isn't something I've run into before.

And BH, I want to do the work. Besides this being a 180, I feel the benefits will be good.

Glam., Diet and Cardio are the secret to 6-pack abs. You say your diet is pretty good. Well, in order to have that look, it will have to be great! Do you do a lot of cardio? If you don't, increase it to 45-60 min. 5 days a week.

Breton, if you can afford it, get yourself a set of 10lb. 15 lb. and 20lb. dumbells. Wal-mart sells them pretty cheap. I don't think 5lb, weights are going to get you where you need to be. If you can get those, I can set you up on a program to tighen your muscles up. As for the knee, I strongly suggest seeing a DR. about that. If you are having problems on a stationary bike, it sounds like an ACL issue. That's not a good thing!

BH--

Alright, I am jumping on this bandwagon.

I am not active above what it takes to manage a house with three kids and I watch my 18 month old great-nephew during the day. I am not having a problem with getting weight off--that just took changing my eating habits, portion control, and relying on God to help me make the right choices. I have lost 30 lbs since the first of the year, but still have a LONG way to go to where I would like to be.

My problem area is my arms, specifically the flabby area underneath. I have started to lift low weights (1-2lb hand weights) doing all of the typical lifts in sets of 15-20 reps. I do 3-5 sets a say, depending on how much free time I have with the boys. Is this a good start and then build to heavier ones? I also have 3, 5, and 10 lb hand weights.

I am planning on joining a gym, very soon, just need to ensure that I have a sitter in the evening in order to do it.

Now that the weather is starting to break and we have daylight savings time, I will also be walking in the afternoons with all of the kids, involving pushing said nephew in a double stroller.

I used to be very active--I played soccer, softball, and basketball, but it has been many many years since I last played any sports. I cannot run, I have cartilage damage in my knees from past injuries and my weight.

Suggestions?

OK, First congrats on the weight loss!!! Good for you!! Keep up the good work in that area!! As for lifting and your arms, no, going really light and high reps is not the best way to tone arms, or any muscles for that matter. The back area of your arms is the tricep muscle and it makes up 3/4 of your total arm mass. What I suggest for those are dips, with a chair 4-6 sets of 6-8 reps, close grip push-ups same set and rep scheme, tricep extensions with the dumbell same set and rep scheme. Remember this, you most work your total body to have good overall symatry. Concentrating on one or two areas will make you look out of proportion.

BH, I do not think I have a ACL tear> I read the def and it is not how my knees feel.

I think I still have "alignment" problems. My knees (plural) do not hurt as much today. Also, my lower back hurt--it also feels better today. I did some gentle stretching and very very light dance today. I think I am going to have to work harder on the physical therapy so I am balanced.

I want to push harder but I think I am going to have to be super-patient.

As far as weights, I understand what you are saying but I have to move very slowly, I am afraid. I think I'll spend some time with the light weights while I try to get the "core" muscles to where they need to be so I can do more on the exercise bike and hopefully more in other ways, too.

BH really that is the only way to the 6 pack abs? I do cardio about 30 min 5 days a week and strength training 30 min 5 days a week.

I tried running, but started to get a skip in heart beat, so stopped that, now I do walking on the tredmill and elyptical.

Hi Braveheart,

Thanks for this thread.

Would you explain this a little more? As a dance teacher, I'm in pretty good shape for my, uhm, age. I also walk for 40 minutes to an hour a few days a week. I'm concerned about my arms. My triceps aren't too flabby yet. I use 5lb weights. What are dips and close grip push-ups? I do 20 "girl" push ups a day and lately have added the yoga "plank", but I can barely hold it 10 counts. Should I stay the course or move up to 8lb or even 10 lb weights?

Thanks so much.
