Oh gosh, Hmama! So sorry for having to go through this on top of everything else. I know the sadness of having a beloved pet put down. I am sure you have many fond memories of him, and that usually keeps them alive in our hearts and minds.
I am surprised your H was there. I hope he was supportive instead of being his MLC self.

Thank you. That "on top of everything else" really doesn't apply here--Max gave us more good years than 95% of dogs, so every day he was able to trot to his food bowl and meander the perimeter of the backyard was a gift. I think he stuck it out as long as he could!
H was there because D was with him yesterday afternoon, and I called to see how we should proceed with her being present or not--with her input. He was like the "old" H--supportive, good dad, showing real emotions besides anger. Maybe Max's last gift--bringing out the best in H even as he was dying.
