karen, go in to your bank branch and talk to your branch manager. Explain your sitch to them. If you've been a client for a while, let them know that you have deposited checks from your H on several occassions with out any problems. Ask them if they can make a phone call to verify the check before depositing it. Don't talk to a teller or sales rep. Talk to the manager or assistant manager.
You'll have to be a bit on the aggresive side. All banks have to conform to Reg. CC and if the check is local and you do not have a new account, nor have had a problem with NSF's or the check is not over $5,000, it should not be held longer than 3 days, if I'm not mistaken.
Only in certain cases should they be able to hold it longer.
And be sure to take some penicillin very soon.
