M, Your h reminds me so much of JeanS' husband in the way he is going about things. Her h brought things back piece by piece and the clothes were the last things that arrived home. Your h is spending quite a bit of time at your home as well. Slowly, slowly he is inching his way back.
About the letter to his father, I think it is something he needs to do...it's not only for financial support, but the reconnection as well. You see, he's never left you and your family totally, but he did disconnect from his father, now reconnection must take place.
