I don't have much to contribute since I'm new. I will go back and read your whole story, so I'm just chiming in here on the end.

From a woman's pov, if I had to go somewhere in the evening (dark) that was 40 miles away and I wasn't familiar with the area I'd want someone to go with me too. That said, she asked and if you already have plans then too bad for her. Sounds like she realized she had to make other arrangements than to rely on you.
