I cant imagine being away from my kids. I can understand the pain and uncertainty you must be going through. My X had threatened once to take them to live in Thailand and that scared the living daylights out of me. Kids need both parents.
I read you mention Portland as a possible job prospect. Is there any possiblity that if you got a job here that you could convince the X to convince Nick to think about moving here. We do have several ski areas that have ski schools. Of course, the kids may not want to move as they have all the friends at their current schools.
I too will be handing the X a very large 6 figure check soon. Ouch! I wonder if I should use an extra large size. What did you write in the "For" line?
