When you say "call logs," do you mean on the bill's detailed billing (or website), or on the phone's call log? He may be deleting his call log, if he's smart.
It's probably a pay-as-you-go phone (like BoostMobile). He may be replenishing it with a debit card, in which case you can check. Or he could be buying prepaid cards at the drugstore.
