Hmmmm although I agree that W motives for funeral, probably is to parade them like pets to hear " what a wonderful job she is doing as a mother etc etc " That would a lie but i imagine she may not see it like that. Cruel to kids as well. i would not let them go also.
With regard to exposing children to death, I think it is important that they realise what this life is all about and that death is part of it. Honoring and celebrating the lives of those that pass over , allow children to see life is for living, death is not to be afraid of and that everyone left behind will be ok.
BUT i agree in your situation that for a very very distant loosely related person it is senseless.
